Being the month of May, many areas in Kenya are experiencing heavy rains, especially in Nyanza and Western regions. Kakamega county is one of the counties in Western region being affected by heavy rains. Many rivers have flooded, causing bridges to be washed away.

River Lusumu of Mumias East constituency is one of the rivers which has flooded, causing the wooden bridge to be washed away. This has caused lots of suffering to the residents who uses it in crossing. Farmers around the river have been negatively affected since their gardens have been flooded leading to soil erosion and also their plants have been carried away. Since the bridge has been linking two constituencies (Mumias East and Lurambi), farmers used to transport their products to the markets within the constituencies, they are unable to transport their products thus creating a big loss.

Farmers has sent an urge to the constituency government to ensure a modern bridge is being made to avoid such scenario next time. Pupils and students of Makunga and Esokone have been negatively impacted since they are forced to use long distances in reaching their respective schools, which have affected their academics. Lodging of maize which is the main food crop among the Kakamega people is also an effect of the heavy winds accompanied by the stormy rains in the region.

Stagnant waters are observed everywhere. This has led to an increase of mosquitoes, which indeed has resulted in a sharp increase of malaria outbreak. Mass tree breaking has also affected residents within the region. It has made some roads impassable since it tells along the roads. Also, it has created a loss to the tree owners since some of the residents sells the trees for income.
